Plot Summary:“The Last Exorcism” is a documentary-themed sci-fi/horror thriller that features Patrick Fabian, Ashley Bell, and is directed by Daniel Stamm. The fake documentary, better known as ‘mockumentary’ format, has been popularized in recent years and has made its way through a number of different genres.
The film has a very low budget, and does as much as it can with the little amount of funding it had. The movie pretty much rehashes a series of old topics, and doesn’t have any scares that are good enough to compare to any of its more successful predecessors.
The film follows Cotton Marcus, who is a 40 year old preacher in Louisiana who is in the early stages of his retirement from the exorcism business. As you could probably surmise on your own, Marcus has been blessed with the ability to talk to demons since he was a kid, and is an expert at expelling them.
While on camera, he tells the crew that all of his exorcisms are a sham, and that he uses a series of tricks to make the spectacle more appealing to his customers. He also reveals that he does not really believe in any of the entities he is supposedly expelling from his customers.
Soon, he receives a letter from a girl who has been woken up, drenched in blood, next to dead farm animals. It is easy to see where the plot is heading from the very beginning, and “The Last Exorcism” simply doesn’t have the budget to make the mockumentary stand out from other, similar films.
