India's Mariyappan Thangavelu created history at the Rio Paralympics 2016 by winning gold in men's high jump T42 event.

The 21-year-old Thangavelu cleared a jump of 1.89 metres to strike gold on Friday (September 9).

Thangavelu is the first Indian to win a gold in Paralympics high jump. It was a memorable event for India as another athlete - Varun Singh Bhati took bronze. USA's world champion Sam Grewe took the silver. India's another high jumper Sharad Kumar cleared 1.77 metres but finished 6th.

Both Varun and Grewe cleared 1.86 metres but the American took 2nd place on count-back. This is the first time 2 Indians had finished on the podium in the same event. In Paralympics history, this is India's 3rd gold after Murlikant Petkar (swimming in 1972 Heidelberg, West Germany) and Devendra Jhajharia (javelin throw in 2004 Athens)

India now has two medals - gold and bronze at the ongoing Paralympics. Thangavelu opened India's medal tally. The T-42 classification is for athletes with lower limb deficiency, leg length difference, impaired muscle power or impaired range of movement. At the Rio Olympics 2016, which concluded on August 21, India claimed 2 medals - silver and a bronze.

Shuttler PV Sindhu created history by taking a silver while wrestler Sakshi Malik came back home with a bronze

International Women's Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day is marked on the 8th of March every year.It is a major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women's economic, political and social achievements.
Organisations, governments and women’s groups around the world choose different themes each year that reflect global and local gender issues.

Some years have seen global IWD themes honoured around the world, while in other years groups have preferred to ‘localise’ their own themes to make them more specific and relevant.

THEME: So while many people may think there is one global theme each year, this is not always correct. It is completely up to each country and group as to what appropriate theme they select.
Below are some of the global United Nation themes used for International Women’s Day to date:
- 2011: Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women
- 2010: Equal rights, equal opportunities: Progress for all
- 2009: Women and men united to end violence against women and girls
- 2008: Investing in Women and Girls
- 2007: Ending Impunity for Violence against Women and Girls
- 2006: Women in decision-making
- 2005: Gender Equality Beyond 2005: Building a More Secure Future
- 2004: Women and HIV/AIDS
- 2003: Gender Equality and the Millennium Development Goals
- 2002: Afghan Women Today: Realities and Opportunities
- 2001: Women and Peace: Women Managing Conflicts
- 2000: Women Uniting for Peace
- 1999: World Free of Violence against Women
- 1998: Women and Human Rights
- 1997: Women at the Peace Table
- 1996: Celebrating the Past, Planning for the Future
- 1975: First IWD celebrated by the United Nations

Remember the dignity of your womanhood. Do not appeal, do not beg, do not grovel. Take courage, join hands, stand beside us, fight with us- CHRISTABEL PANKHURST.

Woman is the companion of man, gifted with equal mental capacity- MOHANDAS KARAMCHAND GANDHI“If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” ~ Margaret Thatcher“The fastest way to change society is to mobilize the women of the world.” ~ Charles Malik.

Mumbai, Feb 26: In a strong case of abuse of office, yet another rape allegation has surfaced against someone holding a position of authority. After the shameful case that grabbed the limelight in the BSP MLA Purushotham Dwivedi's case, now it is the turn of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLA Dilip Wagh who has embarrassed the party with his shameful act. He is an MLA from from Pachora, Jalgaon, Maharashtra.

A rape case has been registered against him by a girl who claims that she was subjected to rape after being promised of a job. According to home department officials, the girl hailing from Aurangabad was invited to the government guest house in the pretext of a job offer. They said, “When the girl visited Nashik, they raped her at a government guest house on February 21."

She filed a complaint on the sexual advances with the Sarkarwada police on Feb 22.

While the MLA has cried foul and said that this was a political conspiracy against his detractors. RR Patil, Home Minister of the State has however engaged in the case and has taken immediate action and commented, "The police has registered a case against the accused and are probing the case. The picture would be clear once the investigation is over. All are equal before the law and police would conduct the probe impartially."

While the NCP is a major ally in the state, the Opposition has jumped on to the case with fervour and have floated accusations that timely action was not taken.

Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena MP and spokesperson remarked, "The moment a complaint in such a case is lodged against any individual, the first thing police does is arrest the accused. But in this case, the police is deliberately delaying the arrest of both the accused, as one of them is an MLA of the ruling Democratic Front government."

India is the largest and one of the most vibrant democracies of the world, ably running a democratic system for more than six decades. We should be proud of it because very few developing nations have actually been able to run a effective democratic system. The role of Election Commission of India is to upkeep the principles on which the nation was built. The Election Commission over the years enhanced its credibility by fair, fearless and impartial exercise of its constitutional authority in cleansing the Indian electoral system and stands as the custodian of the Democracy.

Today more and more countries are attracted towards democracy, because it is a governance of the people, by the people and for the people. Democracy demands greater devolution of powers not necessarily from the State Government to the local bodies but from the highest power center to the lowest unit of administration and that is why a new slogan called “Lok Sabha to Grama Sabha” has been coined, whereby power has to be returned from the Central Government to Local Government.

SPECIAL TRAINS FOR PONGAL / SANKRANTHI | ONLINE TRAINS RESERVATION

6:55 PM
Indian Railways manufactures much of its rolling stock and heavy engineering components at its six manufacturing plants, called Production Units, which are managed directly by the ministry. As with most developing economies, the main reason for this was the policy of import substitution of expensive technology related products when the general state of the national engineering industry was immature. Each of these six production units is headed by a General Manager, who also reports directly to the Railway Board.

There’s outrage over the Central Bureau of Investigation’s closure report on the Aarushi Talwar murder case. The CBI has said in court on Wednesday that despite two years of investigation, it cannot solve the murder of 14-year-old Aarushi Talwar, and her family’s domestic help, Hemraj

Aarushi’s friends and well wishers and many others are as baffled by it as Aarushi’s parents. Aarushi’s friends are now planning to hold a protest rally in the capital on Friday.

In 2008, the then CBI director had told NDTV that the agency was confident of cracking the case and knew who the killers were. But now, the agency has given up on trying to solve the case. It told a Ghaziabad court that it had not been able to collect enough evidence against anyone. (Post your comments here)

“I am deeply shocked…really devastated by what I’ve heard. I don’t know what to say or do. I am completely broken,” said Nupur Talwar, Aarushi’s mother, to NDTV. Her voice wavered as she added, “I had huge hopes pinned on the CBI…this is not something I can deal with or bear.

SHIVRAJ PURI CITIBANK | SHIVRAJ PURI IN RS 350 CRORE FRAUD NEWS

12:22 PM
The DLF-II branch of Citibank has unearthed a fraud allegedly engineered by its relationship manager, Shiv Raj Puri, which initial estimates suggest could be of the order of Rs 300-350 crore.
The fraud, one of the biggest of its kind, came to light when the foreign bank launched an investigation into a certain set of suspicious transactions involving a few accounts in the Gurgaon branch. Subsequently, the bank’s assistant vice-president Binu Soman lodged a complaint with the local police, giving details of the plot. A case of fraud has been registered against the manager and three of his close relatives.

According to the police, Soman’s complaint states that Puri had got a joint account opened in the names of Prem Nath, Sehna Prem Nath, and Deeksha Puri in September 2009. Earlier this month the bank checked the joint account and realised that there were large cash transactions from this account.

Besides, the bank received inputs from some of its customers that the branch had a specific scheme that promised a very high interest rate to the investors, which was not the case. That made Citi suspicious and they started investigating the matter internally, said a senior police officer.

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY DEC 10 TH | HUMAN RIGHTS DAY 2010

3:55 PM
Human Rights Day across the country. This day has been set aside for South Africans to recognize their rights and ensure that prior abuses won’t happen again. In 1996, President Mandela, in a statement on Human Rights Day’Human Rights Day is celebrated annually across the world on 10 December.
The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the first global enunciation of human rights. The formal establishment of Human Rights Day occurred at the 317th Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly on 4 December 1950, when the General Assembly declared resolution 423(V), inviting all member states and any other interested organizations to celebrate the day as they saw fit.

“Today, poverty prevails as the gravest human rights challenge in the world. Combating poverty, deprivation and exclusion is not a matter of charity, and it does not depend on how rich a country is. By tackling poverty as a matter of human rights obligation, the world will have a better chance of abolishing this scourge in our lifetime….Poverty eradication is an achievable goal.”

The 62th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights occurred on 10 December 2010, and the UN Secretary General launched a year-long campaign leading up to this anniversary. Because the UDHR holds the world record as the most translated document, organizations around the globe used the year to focus on helping people everywhere learn about their rights.

“I am able to learn through those who have been at Mu’l’livaaykkaal in the final days of war, that Shoba remained unarmed and did not take part in combat,” the Vanni correspondent told TamilNet, adding that Shoba lost her 6-month-old baby girl, named Akal, in the last stage of the war in Sri Lanka’s indiscriminate bombardment on civilians.
