OIL PLATFORM EXPLODES IN GULF OF MEXICO 2 SEP 2010
One person was injured after an explosion on an oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
It happened around 9 a.m., and as of 10:15 a.m., the platform was still burning, Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said. Rescue crews from New Orleans and Houston responded.
Officials said there were 13 people aboard the structure, and all of them have been accounted for. Initial reports from the Coast Guard indicated that one person was missing.
Workers were being taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center in Houma, officials said. The Coast Guard reported that one person was injured, but Mariner Energy, the company that owned the platform, said no one was injured.
Two helicopters from Houston and three from New Orleans are responding to the blast. Two other fixed-wing planes and two cutter ships are also responding, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard officials described the burning structure as a platform, not a rig, which means it was not actively engaged in drilling. Officials told WDSU that the workers were sanding and welding at the time of the blast.
Mariner Energy said the facility is producing an average of 1,400 barrels of oil and 9.2 million cubic feet of natural gas a day.
“Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident. The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken,” the company said in a statement.
Mariner said an initial flyover showed no oil spilled into the water.
Many of the crews that responded to the blast are those in the area for the cleanup of the BP oil spill, which followed the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig on April 20.
Mariner Energy is headquartered in Houston and has an office in Lafayette, La.
